A-Level Physics and Maths Tuition

Twelve weekly one-hour sessions per term, taught online or in person in Slough.

Two skills, not one

A-Level physics rewards two separate skills, and most students are only ever taught one of them. The first is understanding the physics well enough that problems become obvious rather than memorised. The second is converting that understanding into marks — knowing what an examiner is looking for, what wording earns credit, and how to structure an answer under time pressure.

A student can be strong at one and lose two grades to the other. This programme addresses both, in that order.

How a term works

Every programme begins with a written diagnostic assessment. I mark it properly and send you a written summary of what your child actually understands, where the gaps are, and what we will work on. You will know within a fortnight whether this is working, because you will have it in writing rather than in impressions.

From there: foundation repair on whatever the diagnostic exposed, then current syllabus topics taught slightly ahead of school so that lessons become revision rather than first exposure, then past papers under timed conditions marked against the official mark scheme.

Starting in Year 13

A student joining in Year 13 with exams approaching needs a different approach. We begin with a full past paper, sat cold and timed. It is uncomfortable, and it is the fastest route to the truth. We then work through what it exposes, in order of marks lost rather than syllabus order.

A student in that position does not need to know everything. They need to stop losing the marks they are currently losing. Those are different objectives, and only one of them is achievable before the exams.

Taught by a physicist

I hold a PhD from University College London in superconducting nanoelectronics and have taught since 2002. That matters at A-Level because the topics students find hardest — fields, capacitance, quantum phenomena, nuclear physics — are the ones where a tutor working from a textbook runs out of depth exactly where the student needs more of it.

Fees

£60 per hour, or £720 for a twelve-session term paid in advance.

These are introductory rates, held until 31 March 2027. Families who start at these rates keep them for as long as they continue.

Every enquiry begins with a free thirty-minute consultation, including a short diagnostic. If I am not the right person, I will tell you.
